I’d really love if we could pick from a few icons for groups, it would make them much more distinguishable

I made this little concept, but was too lazy to add icons.

Some icon ideas:

  • friends (group of people)
  • paintbrush
  • computer
  • video game controller
  • clock
  • book
  • heart
  • paper plane
  • music note
  • a flower

Maybe emojis like FL did? That way you get a lot more options without having to find/create icons.

It’s pretty hard for me to easily distinguish group just by the single letter that’s so small on my screen and a color.

this might be a while to get to, because I think there are other higher impact things I need to focus on first and because making an emoji picker sounds like a trivial thing, but is a bit of work to do right. Also the concentric circle icon doesn’t just represent your group, it represents the ‘concept’ of groups.

I think rather than replacing the circles, but being able to add an optional emoji to it would be the smoothest way to go. So your group icon would be a colored badge that contains:

  1. circleGroupIcon
  2. optionalGroupEmoji (the new part)
  3. groupnameLetter

I have an easier solution: you could render the first two characters if the group name starts with an emoji instead of just one, this way you don’t have to add an emoji picker, we can just use the one built into the OS.

I suggested replacing the group icon because i think three things in that little badge are too much.

It’s not exactly that it doesn’t help me distinguish between my groups, it’s that it feels much slower to register than looking at icons.

I would really like to hear what others say tho because my main problem is that all space badges start with the circle and my brain automatically looks at that first, and that’s the same for every group

But maybe it’s an even less important issue, space badges are quite small so the color is the most distinguishing factor…

I still like my original idea tho, seeing the same circle for different things in the group list is kinda boring and some monochrome icons would most definitely make it more interesting.

i’m also not against providing an emoji option because the work to make the emoji picker will be reusable for Should emojis replace card voting?
