Plan: Renaming teams to groups and releasing it to everyone

In order to get more people using this and more feedback sooner, I’m planning on

  • renaming the current ‘Teams’ beta feature (https://help.kinopio.club/posts/teams/) to ‘Groups’
  • removing the feature that members of a team get unlimited cards. team members are just regular users, who can access/add team spaces, but are still subject to regular limits if they’re free.
  • opening up the ability to create Groups and add spaces to Groups to Upgraded users. Free users will need to upgrade to do any group things except edit spaces.

The key thing is that I’m removing the extra scope of any fancy billing and deferring it for a future teams product. It’ll be easier to grow and measure irl teams demand that way too.

The way I see it is there’s a pyramid w teams and groups being separate pieces of the same puzzle:

Teams are a collection of groups, groups are a collection of spaces.

Teams will add the ability to see/manage and bill for everyone across a defined set of groups (defined by team admins).

In a sense, this lets groups act more like workgroups or projects in other apps. As well as addressing the individual need for space folders in a less awkward way.

another potential benefit of teams will be having a dedicated full page to manage groups/users, and also be able to pin/showcase specific group spaces (e.g. readmes and org charts)

+1 - I think this is superb and hits on a lot of what we discussed awhile back about grouping spaces and billing being separate things. Really glad to see this.

if a user is in a group, but they’re not upgraded, should they be able to add their own spaces to the group?

As in a one-way change of ownership?

Not one way. When you add a space to a group , you can always remove it from the group later if you want . My question is about whether a non upgraded member of a space should be able to add their spaces to a group

I’d say that yes, but keeping the 3 spaces limit.

It’s similar to the way Figma restricts free users. They are limited to View-only and need to upgrade.

discussing free user limits is prob best done in this existing thread Stricter free user limits - #7 by Anonymous. This thread is just about teams/groups
